HISTORY
CLUB Our next History Club will be on
the subject of the Shanghai Ghetto, the story of the 20,000 Jews who managed to
survive the Holocaust in Japanese- occupied Shanghai because it was the only
place in the world that did not require papers to be admitted. On a date
in May to be announced, we will see a film on the subject narrated by Martin
Landau, and, for those who want to start reading, the following books:
Farewell Shanghai by Angel Wagenstein, a very interesting novel, and 3
memoirs: Shanghai Refuge by Ernst Heppner, the one with the most facts,
including those about the contribution of Sugihara and Jan Zwartendyke in providing
visas to Curacao, and Shanghai Childhood by Sigmund Tobias, describing his
education at the Mir Yeshiva which had relocated to Shanghai, and Shanghai
Diary by Ursula Bacon, who in a totally charming writing style describes her
teen-age experiences teaching English to the three concubines of General Yi and
other adventures! Reviews of the movie: Academy Award-winner actor Martin Landau narrates
this riveting documentary about Shanghai's little-known Jewish ghetto, settled
in the 1930s by Jews who fled Nazi Germany. SHANGHAI GHETTO recalls the
strange-but-true story of thousands of European Jews who were shut out of
country after country while trying to escape Nazi persecution in the late
1930s. Left without options or entrance visas, a beacon of hope materialized
for them on the other side of the world, and in the unlikeliest of places,
Japanese-controlled Shanghai. Fleeing for their lives, these Jewish refugees
journeyed to form a settlement in the exotic city, penniless and unprepared for
their new life in the Far East. At the turn of the new millennium, filmmakers
Dana Janklowicz-Mann and Amire Mann boldly snuck into China with two survivors
and a digital camera to shoot at the site of the original Shanghai Ghetto,
unchanged since WWII. Their never-before-seen recordings--along with interviews
of survivors and historians, rare letters, stock footage, still photos, and an
original score depicts an incredibly moving portrayal of a rich cultural life,
bravely constructed under enormous hardship. The books are available at Amazon
- I will try to attach reviews to a subsequent bulletin.

BOOK
CLUB The next book club meeting will take place
on May 3 at 4:00 PM at the home of Shelley Winchester 19-18 Angelo
Terrace. Shelley will be reviewing the book The
Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story by Diane Ackerman. From Publishers Weekly:
Starred Review. "Ackerman (A Natural History of the Senses)
tells the remarkable WWII story of Jan Zabinski, the director of the Warsaw
Zoo, and his wife, Antonina, who, with courage and coolheaded ingenuity,
sheltered 300 Jews as well as Polish resisters in their villa and in animal
cages and sheds. Using Antonina's diaries, other contemporary sources and her
own research in Poland, Ackerman takes us into the Warsaw ghetto and the 1943
Jewish uprising and also describes the Poles' revolt against the Nazi occupiers
in 1944. She introduces us to such varied figures as Lutz Heck, the duplicitous
head of the Berlin zoo; Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, spiritual head of the
ghetto; and the leaders of Zegota, the Polish organization that rescued Jews.
Ackerman reveals other rescuers, like Dr. Mada Walter, who helped many Jews
pass, giving lessons on how to appear Aryan and not attract notice. This
suspenseful beautifully crafted story deserves a wide readership." All are
welcome!! For further information contact DonnaJGree@aol.com
